About Whanganui Accident and Medical


Co-located alongside the Whanganui Hospital's Emergency Department, WAM sees approximately 30,000 patients a year covering a broad spectrum of interesting pathology.


Our clinic is a modern custom-designed facility. The treatment areas are comfortably furnished, well equipped and for the most bathed in natural light. In addition to the consultation rooms, there's a two-bedded observation area, procedure room and plaster bay. You will have access to a Sonosite ultrasound machine and a recently upgraded slit lamp device to support your clinical activities. The clinic has access to a 24-hour laboratory and radiology service for plain film, CT, and ultrasound. As the clinic is hospital-based, there is direct access to on-call specialists and registrars for advice and referrals.


All patients will be triaged on presentation; those who require emergency care are referred to the Emergency Department. Several shifts operate throughout the day, 8 am – 5 pm, 9 am – 6 pm, 10 am – 7 pm or 1 pm – 9.30 pm. Doctors work 40 hours per week between Monday and Sunday, including public holidays

About the role


We are looking for a Urgent Care Practitioner/Medical Officer/General Practitioner to join our busy team at Whanganui Accident and Medical.  This position would suit an Urgent Care Physician or experienced primary care generalist who is a team player with a caring attitude and professional approach to patient care. Whanganui Accident & Medical Clinic (WAM) is an  Accredited Urgent Care facility providing episodic care for patients with minor injury or illness.

The successful applicant will be experienced in:

  1. Acute assessment and management of minor acute injury or illness.

  2. Management of fracture clinic and minor Orthopaedic injuries including fractures

  3. Ability to perform minor procedures – suturing, incision & drainage, minor joint reduction and slit lamp skills.

  4. Radiology and ECG interpretive skills.
