Are you enthusiastic about the wellbeing of our community?

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for an innovative professional to work in wellbeing teams within the Whanganui Accident & Medical (WAM) clinic, to enhance the ability of the service to provide holistic care to patients. This can be either a part-time or full-time position and is based in Whanganui.​


The ideal candidate will be a clinician or allied health professional who can provide evidence-based brief interventions for individuals, whānau, and groups. The Health Improvement Practitioner role works closely with the WAM team, General Practices, Health Coach, Iwi organisations, other NGOs and community partners, to increase access to brief interventions to improve patients’ mental and physical health, supporting their holistic wellbeing. You will also be a key part of the team providing feedback, education, and advice, with an aim of putting mental health and wellbeing at the heart of the service to support population health outcomes.

This role is part of a model of integrated primary mental health and addictions support, which aims to provide people experiencing mental distress or addictions challenges with access to convenient, high-quality, integrated, and person-centered care and support. As a result, this role will best suit someone comfortable working with change, who is excited by the opportunity to improve and refine the model of care to best meet the wellbeing needs of the community.

The ideal candidate:

  1. Holds current New Zealand registration as a health professional in Nursing, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Counselling or Social Work.

  2. Demonstrates understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and commitment to its application within their practice and improving Māori health outcomes.

  3. Has experience building therapeutic rapport with clients and ideally providing evidence-based talk therapies such as FACT, ACT and/or CBT.

  4. Has highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with within Māori, Pasifika, Youth and wider community networks.

  5. Has excellent computer skills and ideally experience recording notes in electronic patient records.

  6. Holds a current full NZ drivers’ licence.

  7. Is passionate about learning and refining a new model to best meet the wellbeing needs of the population.


Successful applicants will receive comprehensive training and ongoing mentoring, which will appeal to clinicians with an interest and expertise in behavioural health. National training for this role will be provided by Te Pou, with dates to be determined during recruitment.
