Immunisations

We offer both immunisation coordination and an outreach service. This service is available to everyone in the Whanganui community and can be accessed by calling the team on 0800 775 001.

New Zealand is currently experiencing an epidemic of Whooping Cough (Pertussis). The best defense is to get vaccinated. The best defense for children is to make sure they are up to date with their childhood immunisations. The best defense for newborns is for the mother to get vaccinated whilst still pregnant.

Measles is a serious and highly contagious illness, which can affect adults and children.

  • Two doses of the MMR vaccine (after the age of 12 months) protect about 99 per cent of people from getting measles.

  • The MMR vaccine is free for everyone in New Zealand under the age of 18. It doesn’t matter what your immigration status is.

  • If you are 18 and over, the MMR vaccine is free if you’re eligible for funded healthcare in New Zealand.

  • The MMR vaccine has an excellent safety record and has been used in New Zealand since 1990. Like all vaccines used in New Zealand, the MMR vaccine has been reviewed for safety and effectiveness and is monitored on an ongoing basis.

  • The MMR vaccine used in New Zealand does not contain any pork (porcine) products.

Immunisation Coordination

Immunisation is an important part of child growth and development. We aim at improving the health and wellbeing of children/tamariki by increasing scheduled vaccine coverage rates toward the national targets of 95% fully vaccinated by eight months and two years of age.

We also target adults in the region by encouraging the uptake of free influenza vaccination by those who are eligible. Our team also provides education and support for vaccinators, GP practices and general public in the Whanganui DHB region.

Outreach Immunisation Service

We understand that sometime getting to appointments can be hard which is why we have enhanced our existing immunisation services by providing immunisation within a range of contexts, including the home.  The team uses community networks to assist with locating children aged under six years whose immunisations are substantially overdue and facilitating their vaccination.

An outreach drop-in service is available every Tuesday from 9am - 5pm at the WRHN rooms for childhood immunisations, B4 School Checks, health check-ups and other immunisations. If you have any questions about this service, the Child Health Team is available toll free on 0800 775 001.
