Professional Nursing Lead

 

An exciting opportunity is available for a Lead Nurse to join our friendly and compassionate team at Whanganui Accident and Medical (WAM) – a leading urgent and primary care provider, dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to our community.

 

About Us:
WAM is a subsidiary of the Whanganui Regional Health Network (WRHN), established in 2003 to enhance community access to urgent and after-hours healthcare. Situated on the Whanganui Hospital campus, right alongside the Emergency Department (ED), WAM plays a vital role in creating a ‘one-stop shop’ for urgent medical needs.

 

We provide urgent and primary care services from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week, including public holidays, in a well-supported, collaborative environment.

 

The Role:

The key to success in this role will be your strong leadership skills and passion for educating, mentoring, and supporting nurses to uncover their full potential. Your passion for providing high quality, equitable care to our community will help shape our service, and positively impact on the team and patients/whānau alike. You will be an integral member of a multidisciplinary team, working to provide high-quality, timely, and culturally responsive care to patients across a wide range of presentations. Hours are negotiable, with a mix of leadership responsibilities and clinical time.

 

In this role you will support the Service Manager and Clinical Director to:

  • Lead, mentor, supervise, and support a team who are passionate and skilled 

  • Strengthen workforce capability and development

  • Ensure urgent care processes are maintained and nurses work within scope

  • Oversee policies, guidelines, and clinical frameworks

  • Ensure clinical excellence, service quality, and compliance

  • Promote an environment that is positive and supporting, and encompasses our organisational values

 

We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, with post graduate qualifications

  • Has urgent, primary care, or acute care experience

  • Has previous nursing leadership or senior clinical experience

  • Demonstrates a compassionate, patient-centred approach to care

  • Thrives in a team-oriented environment and is committed to health equity

  • Has strong organisational skills with a proactive mindset

  • Has excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills

  • Embraces continuous improvement, cultural safety, and community-focused healthcare
